KANEOHE, HI—The Hawaii State Department of Education named Kristen Brummel of Noelani Elementary School as the 2011 Hawaii State Teacher of the Year during ceremonies held during the Hawaii State Board of Education meeting (today), Thursday, October 7, 2010 in the Castle High School cafeteria in Kaneohe.

The Hawaii Honda Dealers Association presented the fourth grade teacher a new Honda Insight Hybrid (use for a year).

John Shreve, president of the Hawaii Honda Dealers Association, said the Honda dealers chose to award a fuel-efficient hybrid model to call attention to the state’s Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative. The Honda dealers, said Shreve, have dedicated this quarter’s charitable contribution component of their annual marketing budget to the State Teacher of the Year program which includes provision of the car ( use for a year), and an accompanying media campaign highlighting the value of exceptional teachers.

“Teachers play a key role in the lives of our children,” said Shreve of Pflueger Honda. “They bear the weight and responsibility of teaching, and apart from parents, are the main source of knowledge and value for children.”

“The Hawaii Honda Dealers Association is truly proud to support Hawaii’s outstanding teachers.”

Accompanying Shreve to award the key to the new Honda hybrid, were Stan Masamitsu, Tony Honda; Michael Stoebner, Honda Windward; Charlie King, King Honda (Lihue) and Anne Oishi, Island Honda (Maui).

The Polynesian Cultural Center, a longtime supporter of the State Department of Education’s State and District Teachers of the Year program awarded $1,000 and a black pearl to the new 2011 State Teacher of the Year and $500 to each of the other 2011 District Teachers of the Year. SMARTer Kids Foundation provided the State Teacher of the Year winner with a new SMART Board, interactive electric white board, for use in the classroom.

The Superintendent’s Info Exchange newsletter, distributed at the event, quoted Brummel saying she feels “a classroom should be a place where students show one another mutual respect and kindness, and where they celebrate each other’s individuality as they learn from and grow together.” The National Board Certified Teacher has introduced Noelani’s fourth graders to “A World of Discovery,” a place where students are constantly encouraged to think, ask questions, and search for answers.

The 2011 Hawaii State Teacher of the Year will represent the state of Hawaii at the 2011 National Teacher of the Year program to be held in Washington D.C. next year.
